Mr Mkhize’s portrait & other stories for new South
Africa
At the beginning of
this book the authors focus on taking the portrait of Mr Mkhize and his wife,
the book then goes on to describe the situations and circumstances of a variety
of other people living in south Africa. People ranging from High school
children describing the change in there school since it desegregation
(Going from an all white school to a mixed school), to an
old man living on the streets of Durban.
I have two favourite photographs in this book,
The first is of a girl called Isabelle who lives in a gated
residential estate in Johannesburg, she lives a fairly sheltered life but
complains about the electric fences around her estate and about how quite it
is.
The second photograph is of ( a different kid who lives in a
yucky block of flats run by gang members). I like these two photos because they
show the sharp contrast between South Africa’s rich and poor people.
I like how honest this book is it shows numerous people who
live on the streets of South Africa, people who live in gang controlled areas,
people who live in upper class areas, people in prison, and middle class
people. The book gives their opinions of life in South Africa. However I do not
like how graphic some of the photographs are.
